Converting Inches and Feet to Metric Length

What is being converted

This conversion covers common length measurements. It changes values between imperial units, such as inches, feet, yards, and miles, and metric units, such as millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers. The purpose is to get one length expressed in another unit so it can be compared or used in a different measuring system.

The tool uses standard factors to convert any listed unit to meters first. One inch equals 2.54 centimeters, one foot equals 0.3048 meters, and one mile equals 1609.344 meters. The same factor method applies to millimeters, centimeters, kilometers, yards, and miles for consistent results.

Factors and worked example

The calculation is value multiplied by the from factor, then divided by the to factor. Factors to meters are: meter 1, centimeter 0.01, millimeter 0.001, kilometer 1000, inch 0.0254, foot 0.3048, yard 0.9144, and mile 1609.344. These factors make it possible to convert directly between any two supported units without a separate formula for each pair.

For example, convert 5 feet 3 inches to centimeters. First, express everything in inches: 5 feet is 60 inches, plus 3 inches gives 63 inches. Then convert using the inch-to-centimeter relationship: 1 inch equals 2.54 cm. Multiply 63 by 2.54 to get 160.02 cm. The same value can be written as about 1.6002 meters.

Checking the result

A quick check is to compare the result with a nearby known value. Since 1 foot is about 30.48 cm, 5 feet is about 152.4 cm. Adding 3 inches, or 7.62 cm, gives very close to 160.02 cm. If a result is far from this range, the input may have been entered in the wrong unit.

After calculating, use the swap function to reverse the direction. Converting the result back to the original unit should return approximately the starting value. Small differences can appear because the displayed result is rounded, but the underlying displayed value should be close enough to confirm the calculation.

Limits and rounding

Accepted values range from 0 to 1e12. The input can use a comma or a point as the decimal separator. The final result is shown with up to 10 significant digits, which keeps the display readable without promising more precision than the underlying calculation can support.

The displayed result is not a guarantee of measurement accuracy beyond the conversion arithmetic. It does not include live rates, tolerance information, or precision guarantees outside the shown significant digits. For precise engineering or scientific use, treat the displayed value as a converted number rather than as a certified measurement.
